The book manages to tug on your heartstrings while also being laugh-out-loud funny and unexpectedly insightful. Our Chemical Hearts is incredibly cinematic, and the characters are wonderfully well-drawn and believable, the main characters and the supporting cast come alive on the page. Sutherland skillfully dismantles the 'manic pixie dreamgirl' trope while also exploring what it is about first love, and first heartbreak, that is so intoxicating. Grace Town, who walks with a cane, wears oversized clothes, and rarely showers, isn't the dream girl he imagined - but when they are both chosen to edit the school paper, it doesn't take long for him to start falling for her. For “Chemical Hearts”, it’s enough to see the trailer and not worth the entire watch.Henry Page is a hopeless romantic who's never been in love. ![]() It does not leave with viewers in awe or wondering questions about life. “Chemical Hearts” missed an opportunity to go deeper into the minds of teenagers with a less direct reveal of the story’s message. Reinhart is able to successfully prove to the audience that she is a versatile actress. Also, Reinhart’s role, which is vastly different from her breakout character in Riverdale, is nicely done. They act natural around each other and connect. One thing the movie does have going for it is the good chemistry between the actors. The message is basic, obvious, and not worth an entire movie as compared to a short film. It’s also a feeling generated by this deliciously gooey romance. In an early scene of “Chemical Hearts,” Grace points out the complexity of poetry, but the movie failed to follow that same idea that it had one of the characters state. Love is a feeling generated by chemicals in the brain, suggests Suds, the practical, science-versed older sister of Henry, in Chemical Hearts. “Chemical Hearts” tries to be angsty and deep by revolving the plot around poetry. The plot offers little to no originality and lacks suspense with the ups and downs of Henry and Grace’s relationship.
